Lions of the Sea

Reigniting Oman’s maritime eminence

Team Oman may be a newcomer to the SSL but the affinity for the sea runs deep in its history and with a wealth of experience at their disposal the talented team are driven by a passion for the ocean and the dream of winning for the country.

Across the ages, traders and explorers blazed the trail that today’s generation of intrepid sailors follow, and the Omani flag has been flown high in celebration around the world. Spurred on by this success and boasting a fully-Omani crew, themselves Olympic hopefuls, coaches and champions experienced in all classes at the highest level, Team Oman is ready to step up to a new challenge and take on the best sailors in the world.

The captain

Nasser Al Mashari

Built like a wrestler and a former international swimmer, Nasser Al Mashari is one of Oman’s most experienced and decorated active sailors. Joining Oman Sail in 2009, he has gained extensive experience in inshore and offshore pursuits, including winning the Extreme Sailing Series for Team Oman Air and taking part in the Tour de France a la Voile. Growing up in a fishing village he was destined to live life on the water, first representing Oman in swimming competitions throughout the Gulf including the Arab Championship in Jordan and World Youth Games in Moscow in 1998.

THE LEADERS

Musab Al Hadi

Musab Al Hadi’s journey from his small fishing village to the pinnacle of sailing is nearly complete. He is on track to represent the Sultanate of Oman at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 49er class and is one of Oman’s hottest prospects. Since first taking to the water as a professional in 2009, he has sailed on Extreme 40, 49ers, Hobie16, F18, Laser and 49er classes, demonstrating a versatility and base of knowledge vital to success in the SSL.

Ali Al Balushi

A member of the first ever all-Omani offshore racing team, former footballer Ali Al Balushi made the switch to sailing and has realised his dreams of representing his country. He has already tasted victory as part of the triumphant Team EFG Bank in the 2020 Sailing Arabia – The Tour, held in Oman. Ali has also been part of Oman’s successful MOD70 and M34 squads, setting records and learning from the best in the sport.

Hussain Al Jabri

Born in the coastal village of Yiti, Hussain Al Jabri’s ascent to the top has been rapid. After just one year as a sailor, he won gold at the Singapore Laser championships, quickly following this up with victory in the Laser Standard Class at the prestigious Sail the Gulf regatta. Known for his hard work, determination and intelligence, Al Jabri is ready for a new challenge in the SSL.

THE LEADERSTHE LEADERS

THE YOUTH FACTOR

Oman is a relatively young professional sailing country but the mission to rekindle the nation’s maritime history set forth by Oman Sail has inspired a new generation of Omanis to take to the sea. Following the establishment of four state-of-the-art sailing schools, over 70,000 Omanis – male and female – have passed through the training programme, forming teams to represent the country at home and abroad in a variety of classes and becoming coaches to guide future champions. The flow of talent has been steady as more and more cadets graduate to the professional ranks, go on to represent their country and help transform Oman into a strong competitor in the sailing world.
